DIY: Cleaning Your Door Switches
Does your door-ajar indicator occasionally light up even though you’re very sure all’s firmly shut? Or does your alarm system fail to arm because it sense one of the doors, boot or bonnet is not closed? Normally many would dismiss those as an inevitable visit to the electrical man. However in truth, its often just a minor mechanical glitch affecting the door switch which can be easily fixed.
Tools
- screw driver
- sand paper
- anti-rust spray
Method
1. Locate the door switch usually found near the door latch on the B- or C-pillar
2. With a screw driver, unscrew and pop out the switch
3. If the connecting base looks dirty or oxidized, sand it off using sand paper
4. Spray some anti-rust into the screw hole for protection
5. Also spray some anti-rust into the opening of the switch. This would provide protection and lubricate the spring and mechanicals.
6. Reassemble the switch and continue with the other doors
