Caring for Your Tyres

Taking care of your car tyres can benefit you in a million ways. Besides promising a longer tyre life, it can also ensure your safety on the road throughout your journey. Here are some basic tyre care tips that any old or new drivers should know:-

Pressure

Keeping your tyres inflated could help save your life. Under inflation results in unnecessary tyre stress, irregular wear, loss of control and accidents. Besides saving fuel and money and minimizing emissions, properly inflated tyres are safer and less likely to fail at high speeds. A tyre can lose up to half of its inflation pressure and not appear to be flat! Tyre safety experts recommend checking tyre pressure a least once a month with a tyre gauge, which can be easily and inexpensively purchased at an auto parts store. Cars typically come with a placard that gives the auto manufacturer’s tyre-pressure recommendations. This information is typically found on a doorjamb, the gas door or the inside portion of the glove-compartment lid.

Alignment

Have a mechanic check the alignment periodically to ensure that your car is properly aligned. As part of normal driving, parts of your car’s suspension may become worn, and springs can be stretched out. Even a small accident or bumping a curb can disrupt your suspension, knocking some of the highly calibrated components off-kilter, making your wheels sit at improper angles. An alignment restores these angles to their correct measurements, making sure that your wheels sit straight.

Rotation

Rotating tyres at regular intervals can help you check up on the symptoms of various mechanical issues before they get out of hand and reduce the opportunity for wheel vibration along with a number of other issues. Front tyres on a vehicle wear faster than rear tyres. To get the most performance out of tyres and to avoid frequent, expensive tyre replacements, rotate the front and back tyres. Most manufacturers recommend rotating tyres between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. However, consult the owner’s manual for more specific details.

Regular Cleaning

Cleaning your tyres is the ultimate sign of the pride you put into maintaining your car. A consistent cleaning regimen not only makes the tyres look shiny and new, but it will help you spot wear and tear before it becomes a problem. Advanced and unusual wear can reduce the ability of tread to grip the road in adverse conditions. Also check for signs of damage. You should use a product specifically designed for cleaning tyres than an ordinary cleaning product. There is a variety of quality tyre cleaning products that are formulated to effectively remove caked on brake dust from your tyres and rims as well as road dirt and grime.
